What is the tone of the story and give specific examples to support your choice (10 points).
Tone is the author’s attitude toward the writing (his characters, the situation) and the readers. A work of writing can have more than one tone. An example of tone could be both serious and humorous. Tone is set by the setting, choice of vocabulary and other details. (i.e. frightening, serious, playful, humorous, mysterious, suspenseful etc.)
Choose a theme of the book? And give 3 examples from the story to support your theme choice (15 points)
When you are talking about literature, one of the most important things you need to think about is the “Central Theme” of the text. The Theme refers to the central idea or underlying message of the text. The Theme is rarely stated in the text –instead, the reader must usually consider the plot, characters, and setting to infer the theme. The theme is the main idea or message behind the story (not what happens in the story) but an idea or concept that is central to a story, which can often be summarized in a single word (i.e., love, friendship, survival, betrayal, good vs evil, power, family, sense of self, relationships, sacrifice, generosity, etc).
Choose a symbol from your book and explain its meaning (10 points). Symbolism is the practice of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. A symbol is a person, place, or thing comes to represent an abstract idea or concept -- it is anything that stands for something beyond itself.
Examples:
The character of the madwoman in the attic in the novel "Jane Eyre" is identified in Jean Rhys's "Wide Sargasso Sea" as a symbol for women's hidden rage. Or the North Star for Harriet Tubman representing freedom because that’s what she followed at night to lead slaves to the north.
